They left the CHL to make the jump to the AHL. The Edmonton Oilers were supposed to announce that they were moving their AHL team to OK City. Edmonton
currently does not have an AHL team.

The AHL thinks they can do a better job - we shall see ! Is the NBA "blaazing" the attendance records there ?

You have a beautiful NHL style arena 10k a game you make money so why in the world should they not go to a much better league? It was not a matter of money
that knocked them out they chose to leave in order to go the AHL.

Why would'nt the AHL do a better job? Everybody slams the CHL then they move up and now they wont make it. Everybody likes playing in a higher league.
Thats the goal move up...

OKC is a much bigger market than any of the other teams in the chl. i cant believe they stayed in the chl for as long as they did

The conclusion around Oke City is that the franchise "outgrew" the CHL.
Probably true. When for decades a CHL team consistently draws 8-10 thousand and 12-16 thousand on some nights that franchise HAS outgrown the CHL. Now I will head home to listen to "True" by Spandau Ballet (1986). |

well that makes sense that OKC would move up to the A
but how could Austin get a team? There attendance numbers don't support the idea even if the Stars back them.
Heck with a few more hockey fans here we could get one of those shiny new AHL teams

The reasoning, I speculate, is thusly:
1. An upgrade from the CHL to the AHL. 2. New arena signifying a TREMENDOUS improvement vis-a-vis the barn - literally a barn - where the Icebats played. 3. New location of I-35 North in the booming, wealthy northern suburb of Cedar Park vis-a-vis the former location of the you-can't-find-it you-can't-get-there-from-here location on the top of a dark, foreboding hill. 4. A significant infusion of dollars from the Dallas Stars to improve everything involving the franchise. 5. Probably will cultivate a pretty good rivalry with San Antonio and Oke City. Thank you. Now I will head home to watch "The Emperor Of The North" (1973) featuring Ernest Borgnine and Lee Marvin. |

Reading their anouncement, it looks like they ran out of money. Hard to believe.
"Despite attempts to re-organize and streamline the operation, the substantial losses from running the team have led to this business decision." "We've tried everything to make this model work and explored every available option." "When you men get home and face an anti-war protester, look him in the eyes and shake his hand. Then, wink at his
girlfriend, because she knows she's dating a p***y."

It is my belief that the Blazers demise was brought about by the NBA Thunder. They do not want to share "their" arena with a minor league hockey
franchise over which they have no control. Much like the situation in San Antonio when the Spurs brought in an AHL team to share their arena with that they
owned and operated. Look for any team that comes into OKC to be operated as an adjunct to the Thunder. The NBA will get to pick the dates they want and the AHL
team will get the leftovers.
It is my understanding that the lack of money pertains to the Blazers inability to spend the 5+ million needed to renovate the old Cox Center to get it ready to host hockey once again. Not that the team couldn't operate profitably with attendance in the 8,000+ range. |

The AHL team would be owned by "AHL Hockey Club, LLC" It has no connection to the Thunder and the city has agreed to a make a bunch of improvements
to the Myriad (already installed new lighting and new scoreboard). Here is what the city has agreed on:
→Renovation of the Myriad's ice-making system →Upgrade to locker rooms →Addition of a team store and team storage on the east side of the Myriad and AHC will receive 100 percent of the gross revenues. →Loge boxes and lower concourse VIP club →Upper concourse season ticket holders club →Professional signage on outer and inner concourse walls →Back-lit signage on tunnel entrances →Moving lights/GOBO advertising and projection lighting →Interactive advertising panels →Addition of a game day party deck at a location to be determined →Improvements to meeting rooms →AHC will rent out the Cox for $7,500 per game. That cost will increase if there are games on holidays.→When it comes to the schedule, 60 dates will be reserved for preseason and regular season games. Twenty dates are reserved in April and May for any potential playoff games. So that is the gist of it. One season without hockey in OKC is fine with me. I just make a make a trip to Dallas a few times this year. |

I can only hope. If they bring him back to coach the AHL I will not even begin to support it. He is a beer-league coach. If he was a as great as everybody
says he is, he would have been out of the CHL a long time ago. He needs to stay away and continue to play with his horses.

FastCars wrote:Hank, I would have thought they'd be in the black every year also, with those kind of numbers. So why imply that you've been losing money over a period of time? Really weird wording in their press release. "When you men get home and face an anti-war protester, look him in the eyes and shake his hand. Then, wink at his
girlfriend, because she knows she's dating a p***y."
