Does everyone still think that Defense wins Championships? |

I'd say that offense does. Offense scores goals, goals win games, which wins Championships. What am I missing?

Get 'em, Clay!
Our defense this season, that set the WPHL/CHL record for lowest GAA and shutouts (and maybe the most shutouts in the history of minor league hockey), committed mistake after mistake in the playoffs this season. Our defense was the chief culprit for us BEING SWEPT IN THE FIRST ROUND. And I'm not referring to our goaltending. If JD and KC hadn't been very good we would have lost those games by greater margins. How many 2 on 1s and breakaways did they save in the playoffs this season? Twelve? Fifteen? |

Not only that, but how many 5 on 3's did our (lack of) offense whiff on?

The Mudbugs playoff problems start at the top.
When a team is winning credit goes to the coach. When a team fails to perform the blame also goes to the coach. 'nuff said.

Ha!
About forty FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE SEASON, brother. When two of your vaunted defensemen spend the playoffs turning over the puck in front of your net, shooting the puck into YOUR net and being INCAPABLE of clearing an f'ing puck with open ice in front of you YOUR TEAM GETS SWEPT IN THE FIRST ROUND. That simple. I realize that three of our d-men were out with injuries. And the d-men who played were very banged up. Nevertheless, in the playoffs YOU PLAY THROUGH THAT STUFF. No excuses. Thank you. |

Defense does win championships, but the best defense is a good offense.
Like ato said, its execution that wins games and championships. Our team did not execute on either side of the ice in the playoffs. Much of that goes to the credit of the brahmas, but get over it already. Man, at least a puppy quits whining after awhile.... Need another blog to read??? defense still wins championships.....defensive breakdowns will not....we have a kink in our armor that needs attention for sure...but it does not necessarliy
mean we need to overhaul the whole thing....we keep finding ourselves in the same position/shape every year going into the playoffs... imho thats what needs to
change first....we need to be going into the first round with an edge to our game and not in survival mode....and that is what happed to us these past two
seasons....we didn't play our best....last season we hung around a bit longer because of the teams we faced....this year texas was playing at the top of
their game and thus we know the rest of the story....maybe we need to "rest" some of those players in february instead of right before the
playoffs...so this teams has time to get the cohesiveness back together...which this year we surly did not....

In the early days, we outshot our opponenets. We KEPT the ppuck in the offensive zone. We had BIG, smart, skilled players. And we won. We had shooters with
size and skill. We were tough. We had good goal tending. I have ALWAYS said, if you keep the puck in the offensive zone they just can't score from that far
away. Sooner or later a shot is gonna make it in. More would make it in if we had more than one or two good shooters.

LSB--according to Scott, we had 5 of the 6 defensemen hurt pretty badly. Groin tears on 2---one bad back and the other 2 unknown.

True.
We had three of our top d-men on the sidelines. And the three or so d-men who played did so with fairly significant physical problems. The problem for us was that we were so banged up in our d-corps that we were forced to play through those injuries and overcome them. We didn't do so. And when March rolls around EVERY TEAM has injuries and is hurt. The injuries and the players hurting was very unfortunate to us. Seemed as if the hockey gods were frowning on us. Nevertheless, when the playoffs arrive there can't be any excuses. Champions overcome their problems. Also-rans rely on excuses. We were swept in the first round. |
