In fairness to some coaches-the NCAA has tied their hands behind their backs. While coaches and Universitites should not be baby-sitting the players, they have invested untold monies and time with all these atheletes (be it football, tennis, basketball, baseball, golf etc.). Yet they are not allowed to put them in a specific dorm, they are allowed to hold only so many meetings/practices (and at certain times as well).
We hear about the big name sports players, but when was the last time you heard about some kid from the tennis team getting suspended? Or the band member that got caught DUI? And I am sure it happens-just nobody really cares.
There are certain programs at schools that bring in money (football and basketball are the bigges country wide)-and there are programs that lose money-who pays to go watch University golf? Don't cut the programs, but do not punish the money making sports either.
When I was playing ball-we had a football dorm with RAs that did bed-checks-ran study halls-checked grades-tutored-and tried to keep everything and everybody in line. Now players can live where they want and do what they want. Freshamen and sophmores need that structure-as well as a few JRs and SRs. So what if that is not offered to the school population or the men's gymnastics team. If the football program brings in MILLIONS of dollars to the school, they should get a larger slice of the pie and the university should mandate that a large percentage goes to dorms for players.
